Yesterday I found myself in my boss's office alone with not only a banana peel, but a bruised piece of banana. I felt a moment of panic, like I'd been caught with my pants down. What was I supposed to do with this mess?
I considered my options. They ended up being, "Whatever you do, do NOT throw that in his trash can. Or if you want a laugh, whatever." It was pretty inconclusive.
I stood there thinking about it some more, really wracking my brain because I'm a contract employee and don't have my own office and because sometimes I'm kind of slow when presented with complex problems. Finally I hit upon it. "I'll go out in the warehouse and see what everyone is doing."
They were having lunch. At least, my boss was having lunch. The owner was talking to two employees about something in our kitchen area. I sidled up to my boss with the mess I'd now wrapped in a couple Kleenex. Then I called him Big Tuna and told him my problem.
"How do you inoffensively dispose of a banana peel at work?" he asked me, honestly wanting to know the answer once and for all.
I had to tell him I didn't know. Then I saw a trash can with a lid on it by the kitchen area. In went the banana mess. Case closed.
Still, I thought it would be good to cover the options:
Your trash can (not an option for receptionists)
Pros: You handled it.
Cons: You gotta smell it all day.
Kitchen trash
Pros: You put it where it seems like it should go!
Cons: You might have to make lunch later and smell it.
Bathroom trash
Pros: It's not in your trash.
Cons: Instant weirdo. Unless you've already overcome the stigma of being the person who eats their bananas in the bathroom. Congrats are in order.
Warehouse trash
Pros: It's way far away from you
Cons: You are the warehouse guy. Or the tatted up warehouse guys figure out what you did and seek retribution.
Outside trash
Pros: The perfect solution!
Cons: You work for a tiny company that doesn't have outside trash.
Parking lot
Pros: The satisfaction of seeing the peel run over.
Cons: Someone might see you strategically placing it behind your boss's tire.
These can't be all the options. Obviously if you work on a boat "Overboard" is a solid solution. Or is it? This is definitely a problem that more thought needs to go into. I'm thinking Cabinet position is in order here.
